Season Approaches!

With the new season only days away, a party of willing volunteers came up to the Park on Cricket Force Day (Saturday 4 April) to get the ground, pavilion, nets & sitescreens ready. An attempted break-in the night before caused some damage but most of this was soon put right on the day. Many thanks to all those who turned up. The first game of the season is on Saturday 18 April at the ground when the 1st XI start life in the Tucker First Division against Sawston

Indoor Nets 2009

Annual Dinner 2008

Waresley CC celebrated it’s most successful season ever at the RAFA Club St Neots on 14 November. More than 64 members & friends enjoyed a memorable evening in the company of guest speaker Ian Smith from the Beds County League and Club President Michael Banks & his wife Roz. 2008 saw the 1st XI promoted to the Tucker League Division One, the 2nd XI hold their own in Hunts League Division Two, the Beds League Division Three team win their division without losing a game and the Development side finishing their campaign in a similar manner. After a splendid three course roast dinner and speeches from Ian, Club Chairman Phil Masdin and the Captains (including a particularly moving one from Kevin Cole), the annual awards were given out as follows:
1st XI Batting: Jay Szwaybak
1st XI Bowling: Nigel Buckingham-Jones
2nd XI Batting: Phil Gillett
2nd XI Bowling: Jim Keys
Sunday XI Batting: Laurence Bosher
Sunday XI Bowling: Laurence Bosher
Development Team Player of the Year: Dipesh Patel
Slater/Mack Trophy for Most Field Catches: Nick Greenfield & Chris Whitfield – 14 each
Best 1st XI Performance- The Holden Tankard - Chris Whitfield’s century & 4 wickets v Foxton
Best 2nd XI Performance - The Worriker Rosebowl – Nick Greenfield’s five catches at 1st slip v Warboys.
Best Under 21 Performance – The John Gillett Shield - Chris Whitfield for his performances throughout the season.
Most Improved Player - Adams Trophy – Peter Colebrook. Luke Knibbs Colts Batting Award: Dominc Farr
Paul Swannell Colts Bowling Award: Joe Colebrook
Best Club Member – The President’s Trophy – Simon Blows.
Lyndon Price Champagne Moment: Jamie Fensome.

Flowers were presented to Trish Bullen for her hard work in keeping the pavilion tidy, Roz Banks for her help with the fete, Anita Cole for looking after our Aussie, Myles and the indefatigable tea-ladies Linda Warman, Diana Matthews, Sarah Greenfield, Nichola Donald and Jane Colebrook. There was also a bottle of rum for the ever cheerful Barry Warman. The evening was voted a great success by all those present.

1st XI Just Miss Out on Title

Despite a comprehensive 57 run win over Eaton Socon today in the final Tucker League Match of the season, Foxton had an equally convincing win against NCI, taking 25 points and finishing five points clear at the top. Congratulations to Foxton & well done to our boys for finishing so strongly this season & returning to Division One at the first attempt. Also promoted to Division One are Khalsa who beat Yaxley toclinch third position, 69 points behind Waresley.

Tucker Two Title Race Goes to the Wire!

After the 1st XI's crushing win at Fordham & Foxton's game at Eaton Socon being abandoned, there are now just five points between us & the long time leaders with one more game to go. Promotion in second place was confirmed today and anything less than a 25 point win for Foxton at NCI next Saturday leaves Waresley a chance of taking the Division Two Crown at home to Eaton Socon.

VILLAGE FETE

Sorry to say (& if you had not heard), the weather was so wet & the ground so soggy last Sunday that we had no option but to postpone the fete. We will be holding next years fete on 6 September. Apologies to anybody who turned up at the Ground on the day!

ClubMark - We've done it!!!!

We had our final inspection visit by Kevin Clement on Monday 28 July and he was pleased to tell us that Waresley Cricket Club has now achieved ECB ClubMark Status.

ClubMark means our cricket club is properly and efficiently managed, has a safe environment for young players and has a high standard of equity and ethics towards all members.Only clubs that have ClubMark are nationally recognised as being run in a safe, effective and child-friendly manner.

Well done to all of us & many thanks to all those who have put the time in towards this process over the past few years.

Party in the Park 18 July 2008

Despite a last minute downpour, more than 150 revellers turned up for the annual Party in the Park at Waresley Cricket Ground last Friday. The large marquee kept the elements out while partygoers danced to local band B1040. The bar did a roaring trade (thanks to Nick & Sarah Greenfield & their band of helpers) & there was more than enough pork to keep the hungry punters satisfied. John Gillett did his usual excellent job selling raffle tickets and managed to bring in over £300 for club funds. The Cricket Club would like to thank all those who helped with the evening by assisting with the setting up & clearing away and to the generous donors of the raffle prizes.

Pre-Season Letter from Chairman Phil Masdin

Welcome everyone to the 2008 season.

I’m looking forward to the 2008 season for many reasons. Hopefully it will be the year the club gains Clubmark status, confirming our commitment to maintaining high standards for all, as well as opening potential funding avenues.

On the cricket front I think we’ve got a good balance to provide cricket for all levels and push the club forward. The 1st XI will be looking to push for promotion back to Division 1 of the Tucker, with Kevin Cole back in the reins. Thanks again to Steve Warman who has led the 1st for several seasons now and is having a well earned rest from those duties. The 2nd XI will once again be competing in the competitive Hunts Div 2 and also should have aspirations of promotion under Jim Keys.

Sunday cricket has a new fresh look about it after the clubs acceptance into the Beds League, both for the 1st team and for the development team. This should give the club a solid Sunday fixture list to help develop young players. This is something we need if Pat Ellerbeck & Andy Donald’s Colts section keep pulling in 60+ youngsters every Monday night!

Last season marked the end of an era with the passing away of the club’s Life President Jack Stacey at the age of 86. It was only fitting that the passing was marked with the naming of the clubhouse in his honour.  Though I didn’t know him well I think he stood for all that is good at our level of cricket. A local cricket club is more than just a place where we simply turn up and play cricket and we should all “do our bit” to make sure Waresley Cricket Club continues to thrive.

So good luck everyone for a great 2008

Though it’s worth remembering the quote from the golfer Arnold Palmer

It's a funny thing, the more I practice the luckier I get
